It all started for this group of educators at the Teach to Lead Boston Summit where we experienced great things! Kelley Cusmano came back with a brainstorm. Why not bring back this Summit idea and hold our own Summit in Michigan. During the Shiftmich Pitch Fest at MACUL 2015 we pitched the idea and won $1,000 of seed money to start our idea. We all agree that we were very lucky when Gary Abud Michigan Teacher of the Year 2013-14 asked if we wanted to join forces and help plan the upcoming ECET2Mi- Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teachers and Teaching in Michigan. We gladly shifted our vision and embraced this conference started by Bill and Melinda Gates. Led by teachers, for teachers, Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teaching and Teachers (ECET2) is a national event created and made possible by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This convening aims to inspire and empower teachers across the country to grow, collaborate, and lead in a variety of ways to effect change in their classrooms, schools, districts, communities, and in the teaching profession
Planning really ramped up a few weeks before the conference which was all done virtually by Google Hangouts, Voxer, and Emails. It was such an exciting moment when Sunday December 6th arrived and we gathered at Michigan State to do the hands-on preparation and meet members of the planning committee face to face!
December 7th arrived and ECET2MI Began!
Learning Elements of ECET2Mi-
Cultivating a Calling- Keynotes
Our keynotes are designed to reignite your passion for our chosen profession by having other teachers share their stories of why they teach. These stories are shared through keynote addresses modeled after the popular TED Talks series. Our Teacher keynotes will provide emotional and candid stories that get at the heart of why teachers teach and what keeps us going despite the challenges we face in our day-to-day work. We are thrilled to offer a morning keynote from Jay Gross, afternoon keynote from Marcia Bonds and evening keynote from Rick Joseph.

Lunch Keynote- Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley
Colleague Circles
Colleague Circles are groups of teachers that meet as small support communities throughout the convening to share and address common challenges. These circles can serve as a central hub for teachers throughout the convening and can quickly build intense professional, social, and emotional bonds. Some teachers report forming relationships in colleague circles that last well after the convening; many teachers have said colleague circles are the most important and most rewarding part of ECET2.

Breakout Sessions
The breakout sessions at ECET2MI empower the teachers that lead them and engage the teachers participating in them. These sessions will allow us to learn new skills and techniques, access actionable tools and information, and build our capacity to develop into teacher leaders. We will leave each session with key takeaways and tools we can bring back to our classrooms.

Michigan Lead Fellows reunite at ECET2MI
Heather Gauck, Todd Bloch and Melody Arabo
What a great experience bringing together almost 190 teachers in attendance representing various perspectives on teaching and teachers. These individuals span the career continuum, K-12 grades/subjects, experiences, schools (e.g., public, private, charter, independent, religious,) and regions of the state (e.g., urban, rural, suburban.) In addition to the in-service teachers in the room, there were a few school leaders, aspiring teachers, representatives of partnering organizations, and elected education officials, and some students in attendance. We are hoping to repeat this elevating and celebrating experience in the future!
